ABOUT ABOUT

Come enjoy a one-hour yoga session, followed by a presentation and discussion on building resilience in low-income youth through mentoring and mindfulness. This event will be presented by two local non-profit organizations providing critical youth mentoring services, The DREAM Program (www.dreamprogram.org) and Sheltered Yoga (www.shelteredyoga.org).

Currently, 26% of Philadelphians live in poverty and the rate among Philadelphia children is a staggering 36%. In addition, many of the youth we serve are exposed to toxic stressors and traumatic experiences which pose significant impacts on their social, emotional and cognitive development. The influence of positive mentorship from a caring adult, as well as access to resources like mindfulness training in building resilience, are imperative in helping to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty and closing the opportunity gap for low-income youth. Our kids need mentors, and engaging young Philadelphians to serve as positive role models to youth would have long-term, far reaching benefits to both mentor and mentee.

Please bring a yoga mat with you. Light snacks, water and coffee will be provided!

Each fall, Young Involved Philadelphia (YIP) hosts State of Young Philly (SOYP), a dynamic 10-day event series filled with programming designed to connect young Philadelphians of every background, showcase their positive impact, and amplify their voices. SOYP 2018 brings together nonprofits, government entities, civic leaders, and local businesses to help young Philadelphians identify what civic engagement means to them and the role each individual can play in driving change in their communities.
